Building a Century of Sustainability with the Most Benevolent Heart

Like the grandeur of our school name “Hungkuang,” our founding president Dr. Yu-Lin Wang  established the school in Shalu half a century ago, feeling the shortage of nursing talents in central Taiwan. With a caring heart for life as a medical practitioner, he integrated humanism into education, making education and medical care his lifelong mission and cause. His selfless great love is indeed a model of fulfilling social responsibility.

Over the past fifty-five years, Hungkuang has evolved from a junior college to a university of science and technology, inheriting the founding ethos and always upholding the educational philosophy of “Begin from oneself, extend benevolence to all” with the most benevolent heart and unyielding spirit of “medical and teaching professionals.” We fulfill the social responsibility of serving others and abide by the school motto of “To Perfect and To Love.” Since its founding, Hungkuang itself has been the concrete embodiment of university social responsibility.

In recent years, Hungkuang has evolved from “a university of science and technology cultivating professionals with the caring for life” to “an elite university of science and technology in the fields of health and civil life,” and finally to “cultivating outstanding talents with health, civil life literacy, and enhancing social welfare.” Our mission remains to nurture talents with a thorough worldview, a caring sentiment, and a sense of mission. The scope of our educational service has also expanded from central Taiwan, to the entire island, and then to the international community.

The essence of education is to promote good through good, to pass on heart by heart, and to lead by example, as Dewey said, “Education is nothing but love and exemplar.” Talent is the foundation of sustainability. Hungkuang continues with the most benevolent heart, building on the past and opening the future, to co-construct a sustainable century of education.

以最良善的心，共築永續百年

巍巍如我弘光，創校校長王毓麟博士有感於中部護理人才之缺乏，半世紀前建校於沙鹿，以醫者關懷生命之心，寓人本於教育之中，使教育及醫療成為畢生的使命與志業，大愛無私，誠然是善盡社會責任之典範。

　　五十五年來，弘光從專科、技術學院升格至科技大學，傳承典範，始終以「醫」與「師」者最良善的心，堅毅的精神，弘揚「以人為本、關懷生命」的辦學理念，實踐服務利他的社會責任，恪遵「弘毅博愛」的校訓，創校迄今，弘光自身即是大學社會責任的具體實踐。

　　近年來，弘光從「培育具關懷生命特質專業人才之科技大學」，聚焦於「健康與民生領域的頂尖科大」到「培育具健康與民生知能及增進社會福祉的優秀人才」，莫不以培育具有通達的人生觀、關懷的情操、以及具有使命感的志業的人才為職志，教育服務的對象也從中部在地，擴及到全臺灣，再到國際世界。

　　教育的本質在於以善揚善，以心傳心，以典範帶動典範，正如杜威所言：教育無他，唯愛與榜樣。人才為永續之本，弘光持續以最良善的心，承先啟後，共築永續百年教育。

Deepening ESG Towards a World-Class University

With ESG as the core, Hungkuang published its 8th campus sustainability report this year. ESG stands for environmental protection (E), social responsibility (S), and corporate governance (G). Integrating the five major strategies of our school development plan, Hungkuang nurtures interdisciplinary talents, promotes industry-academia R&D outcomes, enhances international exchange, builds a green and friendly campus, and elevates the public nature of higher education to fulfill university social responsibility. This campus sustainability report demonstrates Hungkuang’s overall performance in ESG.

In the past five years (2018-2022), Hungkuang received subsidies from the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Sprout Project, ranking first among central Taiwan’s private universities of science and technology. We have continued to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fulfill university social responsibility. Our outstanding achievements have been recognized domestically and internationally. We won the 4th National Enterprise Environmental Protection Award, the 2022 Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards Gold Award, and the Outstanding Resilience Award from the British Standards Institution (BSI). We are also the only university of science and technology to consecutively win three major domestic and international sustainability awards.

Looking ahead, Hungkuang will continue to deepen ESG and share this excellence with the international community, advancing towards the world’s top universities ranked by Times Higher Education.

深化ESG，邁向世界大學

　　以ESG為核心，弘光今年出版第8本校園永續報告書。ESG是環境保護（E，environment）、社會責任（S，social）和公司治理（G，governance）之意，弘光結合校務發展計畫五大策略，培養跨領域人才導入新興產業、促進產學研發成效、提升國際交流、打造綠色友善校園及提升高教公共性、善盡大學社會責任，這本校園永續報告書即是弘光在ESG方面的綜合表現。

　　近五年來（107-111年），弘光獲得教育部高教深耕計畫補助款，為中部私立科大排名第一，持續落實聯合國永續發展目標(SDGs），深耕及善盡大學社會責任，其優異的成績已獲得國內外肯定，分別榮獲第四屆國家企業環保獎、2022年TCSA企業永續報告類金獎，及英國標準協會(BSI)永續韌性傑出獎，也是全國唯一連續獲得三個國內外永續發展大獎的科技大學。

　　展望未來，弘光將持續深化ESG，並以此優異為基礎與國際社會分享，邁向THE世界大學之林。
